It’s a false analogy. Yes, we could say that bees and honey are more desirable while flies and vinegar are less so. However, in my book flies and vinegar are just as valuable as bees and honey, though the latter may be just a bit more attractive. I don’t think I’d like vinegar in my tea or a fly in my bonnet. But, I’m not mopping the floor with honey, either. In the grand scheme of nature, all has value.
The name of this blog did not start out as an analogy. As a social media and community manager, I have often pondered on the old proverb, “You catch more flies with honey, than with vinegar.” In community management, you can do more with empathy, helpfulness and humor than you can do with curt and indifferent expression. The more I have pondered on the idea the more it has grown into a monster of a concept with numerous arms and legs. I intend to explore those various limbs in this blog.
The use of the analogy colons? It was an aesthetic design choice that gave me a title that was brief, but delicately provocative.
By the way, I’m Jenn. I’ve been writing professionally in one capacity or another for my whole adult life. I spent a lot of time copywriting for digital agencies where I discovered a knack for social media and community management. I’ve ghost blogged for others, blogged for organizations and blogged anonymously just for the fun of it. But, I have never hosted my own blog.
To me, personal blogs have always seemed a bit self-promotional. There’s no way around it. They are! It’s really quite vain, writing in general. Yet, I have a hard time believing anyone would give a hoot about what I think. Nevertheless, this seems like the right challenge for me right now.
I hope you’ll join me. I’m not just writing to bask in the glow of my own ideas. I am hopeful that my ideas will spark conversation.
I have an unenforceable goal to publish one fresh post every Monday and Thursday. Plus, I promise I will do my best to not say things like, “here’s the buzz,” or “my brain is swarming with ideas.”
